The irregular global distribution of ionospheric observatories makes it difficult to match observed data and to obtain reasonable values at points between stations. This paper presents a new approach to the mapping problem, which can be applied to all types of data representation problems, ranging from the interpolation of missing or irregularly spaced data in time series analysis to the mapping of empirical regularly or irregularly spaced multidimensional data. The method uses local functions whose individual contribution to the total variation decreases with increasing distance from the center of each such function. Several applications of this method to ionospheric problems are presented.
