Results are presented of a photographic and spectroscopic study of the structure and dynamics of the double system composed of the galaxies NGC 4490 and NGC 4485. Photometry of wide-band and H alpha plates obtained at the 120-cm telescope at Haute Provence Observatory was performed to obtain luminosity profiles and isophotes of the system which show the galaxies to be dominated by their disk components, with a particularly high central brightness and small disk scale length. The photometric study also indicates the existence of a stellar structure approximately symmetric about a stellar nucleus and a poorly defined bar in NGC 4490 which is nearly as old as that of NGC 4485. Spectra obtained with the 193-cm telescope at a dispersion of 35 A/mm were used to obtain isovelocities in the plane of the sky which indicate the kinematic minor axis to be displaced by about 39 deg from the photometric minor axis. It is concluded that the velocity field of NGC 4490, with the exception of gas in the North and South arms, can be explained by a disk in which the center of mass is displaced in the direction of the companion.
