Consideration is given to the question of whether neutron star magnetic fields decay based on evidence from both pulsar and binary neutron star studies. Theoretical bases for the supposition that neutron star dipole moments survive for several tens of millions of years or longer, depending on stellar history, are reviewed, and a spindown law for neutron star periods and spindown ages assuming an exponential decay of dipole moment is derived. The distributions of the product of the period and the period derivative, which is proportional to the transverse magnetic dipole moment, with spindown age are plotted for some 200 pulsars, and it is shown that the decay model cannot explain the observed drop-out of pulsars with spindown ages greater than 10 million years. For the case of binary X-ray sources, estimates of neutron star magnetic dipole moments based on a spinup model with the inner edge of the accretion disk cutting into the magnetosphere are then presented which show a striking uniformity. Results thus suggest that neutron star dipole moments may be conserved for several tens of millions of years.
