Optical and infrared data on Virgo elliptical galaxies and Local Group dwarf ellipticals are used to deduce dynamical parameters and metallicity. A relation is found between metallicity and escape velocity. It extends over a range of 14 mag from normal ellipticals down to dwarf spheroidal systems, but breaks down when applied to globular clusters. A simple model reproduces the general trend of the observations.
