The asymptotic transfield equation is studied for relativistic jets that are collimated by rotating magnetospheres under the assumption that the spatial distribution of the poloidal current is given. It is shown that physically meaningful self-collimated equilibria that extend beyond the light cylinder are possible. The light cylinder imposes a regularity condition which makes an outer boundary condition obsolete. The magnetic structure and the corresponding plasma velocity field can be obtained in closed form for any current distribution given as a function of cylindrical radius. A screw pinch and a reversed field pinch are considered and restrictions for the current distributions derived. It is shown that in a cylindrical force-free jet the entire current and return current cannot flow within the beam. For three qualitatively different current distributions the equilibrium structure is explicitly calculated. The way in which the strength of the poloidal current determines the width of the jets is demonstrated. The role of the ambient pressure is investigated. Two regimes in the propagation of the jet are identified. At the beginning it is pressure-confined and its shape is governed by the external pressure. The poloidal jet current is then entirely screened by a surface current in the opposite direction.
