Experimental evidence is presented to show that a real change in the b and c dimensions of the unit cell of muscovite occurs as a function of the pressure at which it is synthesized. The contraction caused by changes of pressure from 5000 to 50,000 lb/in 2 is in the range from 0·1 to 0·5 per cent. The effect is demonstrated as being independent of "leaching," hydronium substitution, starting materials, etc. Phlogopite and pyrophyllite do not show the same effect. Chlorite solid solutions with composition near clinochlore show a similar though smaller effect. The explanation offered for this phenomenon is the progressive ordering of Al-Si at higher pressures. Ordering appears to be enhanced (or made possible) by the presence of a vacancy or substitutional defect in the octahedral layer.
