Cometary science went through two epochal changes, one in 1950 and the next few years, with the invention of the dirty snowball, the Oort cloud, the Kuiper belt, and the solar wind, and another in 1986, with missions to Halley by all spacefaring nations except the U.S. We are now in the midst of another major shift, with the results from recent missions to comets (DS1, DI, and Stardust) and new understanding of the origin of comets from dynamical studies and the advance of ground-based technology. The role of comets in understanding the origin of the solar system is still a crucial one and the future study of these objects looks remarkably promising.
