Pravec et al. [1998, 2006] identified 1991 VH as a binary asteroid on the basis of lightcurve signatures. Periodicities at 2.6 hours and 32.6 hours have been detected in the 1997, 2003, and 2008 apparitions. A third periodicity at 12.8 hours was observed in 2003 only, a fact that has not been fully understood.
We are taking advantage of the asteroid's closest approach to Earth in decades to characterize the system with 10 observing dates at Arecibo and Goldstone between 2008 July 29 and August 12. The geometry allows for excellent rotational coverage and for observations at a wide range of sub-radar latitudes, an ideal situation for shape modeling and orbit fitting.
We anticipate gaining detailed information and testing hypotheses about component shapes, sizes, volumes, moments of inertia, masses, and densities; tidal interactions and non-principal axis rotation; surface features and regolith properties. With this information in hand we will perform dynamical simulations to further characterize the origin and evolution of this system. No binary YORP evolution takes place if the spin period of the secondary is not synchronized to the orbital period.
