It is shown that the properties of hadrons may be simply described by using a metric theory with a very large coupling constant and that the 'missing mass' effect in groups of galaxies might also be understood in terms of a large coupling constant. The hypothesis is advanced that the effective gravitational mass of a moving particle (i.e., a galactic nucleus or an elementary particle) is equal to the gravitational rest mass time the Lorentz factor associated with the particle motion. Implications of such a Lorentzian gravitational theory for the vacuum state are considered along with some cosmological consequences of this theory. The theoretical basis of Lorentzian gravity is reviewed, and a simple model of matter and 'ether' is outlined. Some essential equations are developed for testing the theory with respect to the dynamics of the solar system and the Galaxy.
