Conditions are ascertained under which Smith's (1973) and Ruderman and Sutherland's (1975) models of pulsar emission mechanisms can be reconciled with correlations observed between the characteristic frequencies in pulsar spectra and between these frequencies and pulsar periods. It is shown that Ruderman and Sutherland's model cannot be reconciled with the observed correlations. It is concluded that these correlations impose stringent constraints on the physical parameters of the emission regions and should be taken into account when pulsar models are developed.
