The Fourier transform (Russell) solution for a spectroscopic binary system is extended to include terms arising from the precession of the longitude of periastron passage. This allows for the calculation of all elements of such systems from a single fit to the data. The technique is then applied to two well-known systems, HR 8800 and Y Cyg, and the precession periods are determined from spectroscopic data alone.
