We present observations of comet 17P/Holmes with the Spitzer Space Telescope. Mid-infrared (5.5-38 micron) spectra were obtained in 2007 Nov and 2008 Mar, and a wide-field mid-infrared (24 micron) image was obtained in 2007 April. The spectra taken soon after the explosion reveal wide-spread emission by fine-grained crystalline olivine; the region near the nucleus has less-structured spectrum indicative of larger particles (or particles composed of carbonaceous or other featureless material). The spectra taken in 2008 are completely different, with no evidence of fine-grained silicates. We discuss interpretation of these observations, together with ground-based optical images by M. Holloway, using models for the expansion of the ejecta cloud with a wide range of particle sizes.
