The origin of strong magnetic fields on the white-dwarf components of nova systems and evidence for the existence of such strong magnetic fields are considered. Magnetic-field generation due to temperature perturbations or some other perturbations of the white-dwarf parameters is analyzed, and it is shown that the development of such an instability can give rise to magnetic fields in excess of 1 million to 10 million gauss. Other possible magnetic-field generation mechanisms are also examined.
