Two rather unsatisfactory philosophies that can be adopted to evaluate the cosmological constant (Lambda) for any temperature are briefly discussed. An alternative viewpoint is proposed which explains the occurrence of Lambda as a consequence of symmetry. An analysis is performed in the framework of the gauge-covariant theory of graviation, and it is shown that a time-dependent Lambda arises quite naturally as a result of Weyl conformal symmetry broken by quantum effects. The present-day value of Lambda is determined to be -10 to the -57th per sq cm for an age of the universe of 2.7 x 10 to the 17th sec.
