The origin of hot intergalactic gas in clusters of galaxies is considered. It is proposed that this gas originates during cluster formation. A scenario based on the adiabatic theory of galaxy formation is discussed in which primordial gas is heated and compressed into thin hot 'pancakes' (protoclusters), and the gas that does not partake in galaxy formation remains in the hot phase and is enriched in heavy elements as a result of galactic winds and explosions in the galaxies. This gas is assumed to preserve the entropy obtained during compression, but its temperature is determined by the depth of the cluster's potential well. The probable relict entropy of such intergalactic gas is estimated, and the results are compared with observations.
