A spectrum synthesis analysis of two asymptotic giant-branch stars in 47 Tuc (L1518 and L2602) with considerably different CN strengths is performed in order to determine the carbon and nitrogen abundances in the two stars. High-resolution spectra and DDO photometry of the two stars are examined. It is found that these stars have very similar effective temperatures and surface gravities, that L2602 (which has stronger CN) has a lower carbon abundance, and that L1518 is depleted in nitrogen by a factor of 5 to 10 relative to other elements. It is suggested that at least part of the cloud from which 47 Tuc formed was nitrogen-deficient relative to the other heavy elements.
