Fourteen galaxies have been surveyed for a silicate feature at 10 microns by using filter photometry. The finding of silicates in many classes of galaxy indicates that thermal radiation from dust is a common emission mechanism for galaxies with 10-micron excesses. Near-infrared observations are used to supplement the 10-micron data, and a study of NGC 6946 at 2 microns demonstrates that its nucleus is so heavily obscured that the true location of the nucleus cannot be determined from optical data.
