A theory on the thermodynamics of gravitating fermions is used to analyze a modified hydrostatic-equilibrium equation. It is shown how the temperature of a nondegenerate system will exhibit a typical inversion. The inversion is clarified on the basis of simple physical arguments, and the temperature inversion that occurs in earth's atmosphere is explained in terms of the cited theory. It is concluded that the nature of the temperature inversion in earth's atmosphere results from a delicate balance between effective chemical potential and mean kinetic energy and that the phenomenon considered should also occur in other planetary atmospheres when the scale height of the process becomes less than the height of the atmosphere.
