At energies above 100 TeV it is not possible to make direct observations from which information on the energy spectrum of cosmic rays, their composition, and the nature of particle interaction could be differentiated unambiguously. The present paper deals with the energy domain of extensive air showers, where the wide range of available energy would be expected to allow even crude measurements to distinguish between very different laws of partition of energy among secondary particles. The analysis also covers the 10 to 1000 TeV region of the cosmic ray spectrum, which is intermediate between the domains studied with balloons or through air showers.
