The temperature minimum and acoustic flux at the base of the chromosphere are determined theoretically for Arcturus. The results are combined with values previously derived for the sun, and a tentative explanation of the Wilson-Bappu effect is given in terms of the acoustic heating mechanism. Additional chromospheric heating mechanisms are considered which are suggested by the secular variability of Ca II K2 emission.
