Galactic Nuclei
Scientific paper
About a third of nearby galaxies host a nucleus known as a Liner. The nature of Liners has been under debate since their discovery. Recent observations have shown that most Liners are supermassive black holes shining at a very low luminosity due to a lack of fuel and low radiative efficiency. These are strong candidates for relics of luminous active galaxies shone in the past. In this article, I review our present understanding of Liners in the light of current observations.
