Analysis of ancient and medieval observations of solar and lunar eclipses from between 700 BC and AD 1600 provides an intriguing illustration of long-term O - C investigation. These measurements are from several different eras and cultures: principally ancient Babylon; ancient and medieval China; medieval Europe; and the medieval Arab world. Such diverse observations have proved of great value in studying long-term changes in the Earth's rate of rotation -- as produced by tides and other mechanisms.
