Some methods for determination of the smoothing function and the timings of characteristic events are comparatively studied. They may be separated into two different groups: those related to aperiodic signals and those related to periodic or nearly-periodic signals. Various shapes of the signal are discussed. Criteria for determination of the statistically optimal degree of mathematical model for ``global" fits, as well as of the optimal filter half-width for the wavelet-like ``local" fits are reviewed. They are illustrated on polynomial, spline of constant and variable degree, trigonometric polynomials and ``hyperbolic cosecant"-like models. The methods are applied to the outburst of the cataclysmic binary system GK Per.
