The evolution of white dwarfs is just a process of dissipation of their gravothermal energy. This allows to determine with a reasonable precision the cooling age of white dwarfs and to set a lower limit to the age of the population to which they belong. However, to obtain the total age it is necessary to add the lifetime of the progenitor which strongly depends on its metallicity. Since white dwarfs have completely erased any trace of their initial metallicity we have examined the uncertainties introduced by this lack of information.
