Scientific paper

Bergen Observatory was founded in 1855 to serve Norway's most important harbour and was initially affiliated with the three years older public nautical school. A transit instrument and a pendulum clock were used for time determination, a necessity in order to operate the time ball accurately and to offer control of chronometers to ship captains. In 1857 the Observatory was separated from the school when a full-time position as City Astronomer was jointly funded by the City of Bergen and the National Government. The founding history of this geodetic and astronomical facility has been explored from new source material in several archives. We document the chain of events that led to the establishment of the Observatory. We also describe the initial instrumentation and observing programmes, and review the results from a re-analysis of the geodetic and astronomical data.
