As a contribution to the Final Round-table of the Oujda Workshop on Astroparticle Physics, this article discusses the consequence of the fusion of astrophysics with particle physics on scientists of the "South", on the one hand, and the role these scientists should be playing in educating their societies with regard to their own (advanced and often purely theoretical) research and its importance in the long term to human development, on the other hand. The article argues that astrophysicists and particle physicists of the South must first learn to widen our interests and horizons and not confine them to dangerously obscure areas. Along this line of thought, it calls on the "Northern" astroparticle community to help in achieving this goal. The second part of the article argues for a greater involvement of scientists, both in the North and South, in their societies to benefit both the general public and the scientists themselves.
