The 19th Meeting of the Astronomical Society of India was held in Bangalore during February 1 - 4, 1999. The meeting was hosted by the Raman Research Institute (RRI) as part of its Golden Jubilee celebrations. The 4-day Scientific Programme was prepared by the Scientific Organising Committee, chaired by Prof. G. Srinivasan (RRI). The highlights of the meeting were the special sessions on (a) New initiatives in Indian Astronomy, (b) Possible Indian participation in a 10 metre optical telescope project and (c) The implications of the rest mass of neutrino for astrophysical problems. The Vainu Bappu Gold Medal Lecture was presented by Dr. Sarbani Basu, the awardee for the year 1996. There were invited talks on several areas of current astronomical research, and presentations on recent Ph.D. theses. In addition, there were a large number (about 140) of contributed papers as poster presentations. The Proceedings of the Meeting are being published in two parts. All the contributions submitted to the editor have been refereed. The first part (appearing in this issue) includes papers in the areas related to Sun and the Solar System. It also contains the Inaugural Talk by the ASI President, the Vainu Bappu Gold Medal Lecture, poster presentations on observational programmes with the 10 metre optical telescope and the summary of the panel discussion on Possible Indian participation in a 10 metre optical telescope project by Prof. B.V. Sreekantan. The second part, containing papers in the areas related to Stellar, Galactic and Extra-galactic Astronomy, will be published in the next issue. The 19th ASI Meeting was scientifically one of the most exciting meetings. It is hoped that the Proceedings of the Meeting, that contains only a subset of the contributions actually presented at the meeting, does reflect the substance and the volume of astronomy currently being done by the Indian astronomical community.
