Experiments simulating the processing of various carbon-based materials
under diffuse and dense cloud conditions by UV radiation indicate that
such materials will be efficiently dehydrogenated in interstellar space.
How this behaviour may cause the observed reduction of the 3.4 μm
band in dense interstellar clouds is discussed.
