The last decade has witnessed the development of computational methods for the derivation of the global patterns of ionospheric electric fields and currents, as well as of Joule heating, from magnetometer data; it has more recently become possible to incorporate approximately simultaneous satellite and terrestrial radar measurements in such computational schemes. Attention is presently given to satellite-gathered auroral images that can serve as the basis for an estimation of 'instantaneous' ionospheric electrodynamic quality patterns, over the entire polar region, with a temporal resolution of the order of several minutes. It has been ascertained by these means that large ionospheric currents can flow in low auroral activity regions.
