Observed orientation effects in Bipolar Planetary Nebulae (BPNe) have been simulated computationally and restricted the parameter space of dust rings in BPNe models. Light flux data in the IRAS, JHK, and BVR bands were taken from 29 BPNe and the orientations of the BPNe were estimated. Plotting the relative contributions of each of the light flux bands compared to the sum of the three bands shows a clear dependence on the nebula's orientation.
This dependence was successfully modeled using dust rings. A random population of binary stars of various luminosities and orientations were simulated. Around each of the star systems various dust ring parameters were tested. To facilitate this, 2-d and 3-d models of optical depth were developed for arbitrary dust and gas distributions. The results matching the observed phenomona further restrict the parameter space and lend support to dust ring models around BPNe. This work was supported by the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) REU program.
