By correlating the 2MASS NIR sky survey and the ROSAT X-ray catalog, we have taken the spectra of 868 M-dwarfs, all lying within 40 pc of the Sun. Calculation of the different spectral indices has enabled us to determine their spectral types and absolute magnitudes, which in turn have been used to make accurate distance estimates. We have also done a study of the chromospheric activity going on in these stars, using the strength of their H-alpha emission lines. Also, using their hardness ratios, we have been able to determine their X-ray fluxes and luminosities. Thus coronal X-ray emission proves to be a tool to identify new M-dwarfs in the solar neighborhood.
