I describe the observed departures of strongly-gravitating systems from
the predictions of Newton's theory and summarize one of the most
powerful techniques to model general-relativistic effects, based on the
concept of a 3+1 decomposition of Einstein's equation and a direct
numerical solution of the resulting system.
