Two-mode approximation for magnetic flux tubes of arbitrary diameter is described. The comparison of the approximation with the exact solution for linear waves reveals that the approximation obtained is not restricted to thin flux tubes, contrary to what one would expect. The approximation includes slow and fast body waves for tubes in magnetic environment. The theory of the weakly nonlinear slow waves in flux tubes is outlined.
