An isophotal shape analysis has been performed for 29 E and S0 galaxies observed in the B waveband. The galaxies considered cover a wide range of dimensions and luminosities, and they are mostly in the Virgo area. In the present method, the isophotal contour to be examined is first channel-coded by a sequence of linear fits with a set of eight standard elementary segments. The center position and major-axis orientation of the contour are then determined, along with the parameters representing the deviation from the ellipse. The resulting two-dimensional smoothed and sampled brightness distributions have application as ready-to-use data for model fitting.
