The Nearby Supernova Factory (SNfactory) is designed to advance our understanding of Type Ia supernovae for use in cosmological studies. The SNfactory will automatically discover supernovae using state-of-the-art wide-field imaging cameras and will study in detail 300 Type Ia supernovae in the nearby smooth Hubble-flow, 0.03 < z < 0.08. Spectrophotometric observations will be taken using a dedicated custom-built integral-field spectrograph, SNIFS. The SNfactory search pipeline has discovered over 100 supernovae in its prototype phase and has now moved into full operation. The SNIFS instrument is in the final stages of commissioning and will be integrated into the SNfactory automated search and follow-up program in the spring of 2004. We will discuss our coordinated observation program and present preliminary results on Type Ia supernova rates from our first year of searching.
