The SNLS, the supernova program of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS), is a 5 year program to detect, and measure lightcurves of, as many as 2000 SNe up to redshifts z ˜ 1. This unprecedented supernova data set will allow a precise measurement of the equation of state of Dark Energy, as well as the redshift dependence of the cosmic star formation rate. Four Megacam fields, covering one square degree each, are observed at an average rate of ˜5 epochs per dark run, thereby allowing each field to be observed once every 3--4 nights in 4 colors (griz). The supernovae are identified and their redshifts measured, within a few days of maximum light, at Gemini, Keck and VLT. We present the very first data set obtained by our collaboration during the CFHTLS engineering pre-survey, which started in April 2003.
