The Venera 9 and 10 space probes were able to carry out 13 successful sessions of radio occultation of the dayside ionosphere of Venus at solar zenith angles in the range 10 to 87 deg. N(h) profiles typical of low, moderate, and high solar zenith angles are shown. The region of the principal maximum under different illumination conditions is characterized by maximal electron concentration values between 140,000 and 500,000 per cu cm. By comparison of the data with predictions furnished by the Chapman function, the hypothesis of the photochemical mechanism of formation of the principal ionization maximum in the dayside ionosphere of Venus was confirmed. Some nightside profiles are also discussed.
