Metallicity distributions of halo and disk objects are studied, including those of main-sequence dwarfs and subdwarfs, M dwarfs, red giants, globular clusters, and RR Lyrae stars. The metal-abundance distributions of the stars and globular clusters are found to contain two gaps which divide the entire population of the Galaxy into three groups: a disk population and two types of halo population. The analogous lack of a continuous transition from kinematically old to kinematically young populations is also noted. It is concluded that: (1) metal enrichment of the Galaxy has occurred in discrete bursts rather than as a continuous process; (2) these bursts occurred during the collapse of the early Galaxy; (3) star formation was inhibited during the enrichment phases; and (4) enrichment practically ceased during intervening periods of star formation.
