Some photographs of Io's faintly luminous cloud of sodium vapor are reproduced and discussed. The photographs show a banana-shaped cloud extending about 200,000 km along Io's orbit and curving strongly inward from that orbit; they also indicate that more of this sodium cloud precedes Io than follows it. The cloud is described as consisting of atoms driven off the surface of Io by the constant rain of high-energy particles from Jupiter's magnetosphere, through which the satellite moves. It is noted that potassium and ionized sulfur have also been detected in Io's vicinity.
