We present optical spectra for 90 high proper motion stars in the southern sky. Many of these targets are among the elite sample of stars moving faster than 1 arcsec per year, for which no spectral types existed previously. Using cross correlation routines against a collection of previously published standard types ( ˜ 100 stars), we have determined spectral types for many within this sample that were not previously known. This routine (first presented in Henry, et al 2002) uses a large spectral range ( ˜ 3500 Å) to determine spectral type.
Combining optical spectroscopy with photometric data (previously obtained) allows us to provide distance estimates for several stars in our sample, some of which may potentially fall with the RECONS sample of 10 parsecs. In addition, we identify at least 5 previously unknown subdwarfs within this group.
