The physics of close binary systems consisting of two neutron stars is investigated, particularly with respect to orbital dimensions, electromagnetic and gravitational emission, and evolution. The cases are considered where the noncompact star in a close binary system explodes and becomes a compact star and where a system of two neutron stars so formed has bound orbits after the second supernova. It is found that a close binary system consisting of two neutron stars must have dimensions larger than the distance between the two stars before the explosion and that the components of such a binary can never be at a mean distance of order of magnitude smaller than the radius of a helium core of at least 4 solar masses. Electromagnetic and gravitational emission from a two-neutron-star binary is analyzed, along with the tidal friction in such a system. It is concluded that a close binary system consisting of two neutron stars will be detectable only by observing bursts of gravitational and electromagnetic radiation, that there are about 10 such systems in the Galaxy, and that these systems evolve toward collapse.
