The aberrations of astronomical telescopes are considered in terms of Seidel aberration theory, which explains why the field aberrations that limit the performance of existing large telescopes are of quite different form from those of the very large telescopes of apertures 8m and larger now being developed, and how and why quite different forms of field correctors will be required. An example is given of the design and performance of such a corrector.
