The binary system HDE 228766 is examined with high-dispersion coude spectrograms. Traditionally cited as an example of a Wolf-Rayet (W-R) binary with a high mass ratio, HDE 228766 actually consists of a late O primary and an Of secondary, much as Walborn (1973) has suggested. The orbital elements indicate a mass ratio near unity, based on the ability to separate the hitherto unresolved absorption lines into two components. The gamma velocity of the secondary is blueshifted relative to the primary, while the He II emission line at 4686 A is redshifted; both facts indicate outward atmospheric mass motion. The present mass-loss rate from the system is estimated from the line strength of H-alpha to be 0.00001 solar mass per year. This rate is significant on an evolutionary time scale. The possibility is discussed that a W-R system will be the result of this evolution.
