The search for gamma-ray bursts of low intensity has been undertaken mostly from wide-aperture balloon-borne detectors. The effect of multiple Compton scattering in the atmosphere greatly increases the probability of seeing small bursts and should be taken into account when deducing the ln N-ln S curve. Detailed calculations have been carried out for different assumed spectra in the extreme case of a completely unscreened flat horizontal detector.
