Models of the intergalactic medium consisting of independent cells of 'magneto-ionic' material are used to investigate the effect of such a medium on the Faraday rotation of polarized radio emission from quasars. Contributions to the rotation measures (RMs) of extragalactic radio sources arising from the Galaxy, the source itself, an intergalactic medium, and an 'error of measurement' term are discussed; the problem of removing the Galactic contribution is considered. Several models of the intergalactic medium are outlined, and the resultant intergalactic contribution to the quasar RMs is computed as a function of redshift for various cosmological models. The theoretical predictions are compared with observations, upper limits to the product of electron density and line-of-sight magnetic-field component in intergalactic space are derived, and a 'tail' of higher RMs is found for higher-redshift sources.
