The proposed explanations for the quadratic dependence of interstellar N(KI) and N(NaI) on NH have been re-examined. It has been argued that the implicit assumption of a constant cloud thickness, necessary for the working of these proposed explanations, is not consistent with available observations. An alternative explanation for the approximate quadratic relations in terms of a model including effects of attenuation of the interstellar radiation field has been proposed and found to give reasonable agreement with observations. The required attenuation is consistent with known interstellar extinction properties. In an average interstellar cloud potassium and sodium have been found to be depleted by factors of 1-3 and calcium by a factor of 100-300, the exact values depending upon the carbon depletion.
