The current status of sources, detectors, measurement techniques and equipment, transmission lines, and applications in the submillimeter wavelength region is reviewed. Coherent thermal, microwave, or solid state sources are not yet available, but useful sub-mm lasers are covered. Thermal detectors (Golay cells, resistive bolometers, pyroelectric detectors), photodetectors (and photon-drag monitors), and rectifying detectors (point-contact detectors, Schottky barrier diodes, exploitation of the Josephson effect), and various types of sub-mm beam guides, waveguides, and filters are discussed. Properties of materials and propagation media at sub-mm, spectroscopic applications, applications in far-IR astronomy and plasma diagnostics, in metrology, and communications and radar projects in the sub-mm range are also dealt with.
