The motion of charged particles in a simple field structure representing a lowest-order model of the convecting magnetosphere is investigated. It is assumed that the geomagnetic field is dipolar and that the electric field in the equatorial plane is a linear sum of radial corotation and uniform dawn-dusk convection components. The resulting particle flows are found to contain forbidden zones which surround the earth, coincide with the plasmasphere at low energies, and expand with increasing particle energies. The problem of adiabatic electron drift in the model fields is solved numerically for arbitrary pitch angle, L-value, and azimuth; the results are compared with recent observations and analytical approximations. Proton orbits and velocity-space transitions in the model fields are then determined numerically for arbitrary pitch angle and position, and the results are also compared with analytical approximations and observations. It is concluded that the present model gives good qualitative as well as quantitative results outside the plasmasphere but only good qualitative results inside it.
