The nature of diffuse interstellar regions is discussed, with emphasis on the analysis of data from the Copernicus satellite. The existence of interstellar gas with temperatures from 50 to one million deg K is inferred. The data reduction techniques which lead to estimates of densities, temperatures, radiation flux, and relative abundances are described. It is concluded that: for temperatures less than 100,000 K, there is no diffuse intercloud medium of any significance in terms of mass or pressure; relative abundances, while uncertain, show similar qualitative patterns in both reddened and unreddened lines of sight; and large pressure differences between various types of interstellar regions, inferred formally, do not permit demonstration that the interstellar medium is in pressure equilibrium. Molecular processes and heating processes in dense clouds are discussed. Problems requiring future UV work are mentioned.
