Scientific paper

The International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite, a joint NASA-ESA-United Kingdom venture scheduled for launch in geosynchronous orbit in 1977, is discussed. Scientific aims of the satellite mission include: the low- and high-resolution observation of the spectra of a variety of stars, planets or comets; the study of gas streams in and around binary systems; and the definition of modifications in starlight caused by interstellar gas and dust. The optical unit of the IUE, consisting of a Cassegrain telescope, high- and low-dispersion echelle spectrographs, and UV-visible converters and vidicon cameras, is also described. Target identification and fine guidance, photometric calibration, and the spectral resolution of the instrumentation are considered.
